Before the program started all the attendees were served boxed dinner prepared by Anjum Catering After the dinner when all the people took their seats and settled down, Mohammed Inamullah welcomed the guests and the attendees. Saeed bhai, who has known Anwar since childhood, gave brief background about him. Anwar Qadri was born in Karachi and did his M.Sc. first from Karachi, then second from London and finally third from New York. He also did his MBA from Long Island University. At present he works as an engineer in a private firm. Writing poetry, shayari and nazm and mazahia nasar is his favorite pastime.
His books have been published previously. The first book is based on his own day-to-day experience in life and meeting with different people. Anwar quoted a few of the incidences from the book. After that Tahir Saleem asked him some questions. Some of the questions and their answers were humorous and the others were informative.
Examples of some questions and their answers:
Q: Ye silsila kab aur kahan se hua? A: Kehte haui ishq naam se guzre the ek buzurg, hum log bhi uni silsile ke hai
Q: Bachpan se pachpan tak ka safar kaisa gaya? A: Main ashiqi raah se hote hue guzar gaye
Q: Suhag raat ko bhabhiji ko kya sher sunaya? A: Tumko dekha to ye mehsoos hua ke zindgi kitni khubsurat hai Tahir countered with this jovial sher: Tamam Umr tera intzar ham ne kiya, isi intzar mein kis kisse pyar ham ne kiya.

After that Farzana Bharmal took the mike and introduced Anwar’s second book Tar-e Nafas. She described Anwar’s poetry style which has a strong patriotic theme depicting his concerns and feelings over the current political and global conditions. She recited a few nazms from the book and then asked Anwar to say more about the book. Anwar said that he is not the shayar in the true sense, but like to express his feelings and emotions.
Anwar also recited two rubaiyas and one naat in his soft melodious voice. He said that rubaiya has two parts – each part complimenting the other. However, each part can individually be meaningful. Finally, Musarrat Husain presented a gift to Anwar Qadri and asked the audience to patronize books and CDs which are available for purchase.
After a short tea break, the second half of the program called Ghazal Session started. Ustad Azhar Mehmood donned in his black salvaar-kamiz with harmonium on his side took the center stage. He was accompanied on tabla by Shekhar Pendalwar, keyboard by Ali Asani and dholak/khanjri by Vijay Tandon.
Azhar started with a soulful rendition “beqas pe karam keejiye” from film Mughal-e-Azam. After that he immediately remembered Jagjit Singh who recently passed away. Azhar sang Jagjit Singh’s two popular ghazals : Aahista Aahista and baat nikli to dur tak jayegi. He also sang a couple of Mehdi Sasan’s ghazals including duniya kisi ke pyar mein.
Before rendering any ghazals, Azhar will tell the audience on what raga it is based on and will first sing the aalap.
Giving tribute to late Mohamad Rafi, Azhar sang two of his popular ghazals : chaudhvin ka chaan ho and jaane kya dhundhti hai (film Shola Aur Shabnam). To everyone’s surprise, Azhar included murli bairan bhayi bhajans (Raga Piloo) from Film New Delhi in his repertoire. Continuing the mood Azhar then sang o meri zohra jabeen from film Waqt in Manna Day’s style.
Azhar Mehmood is a big admirer of late shayar Faiaz Hashmi and he always sings one or two ghazals of this great shayar. Azhar sang Aaj jaane ki zid na karo in raga yaman kalyan. Azhar also loves music of late Khemchand Prakash in old film Mahal, so he sang aayega aane wala. The last item of the evening was a ghazal penned by Azhar’s late father.
This mehfil-e-ghazals turned out to be very entertaining for the audience, since they are members of Bazm-e-Adab.
